Doing one’s tandem in paragliding is offering oneself a breath of freedom and memories engraved for life. But to live this first time in complete serenity, some advice can make all the difference. Here are 5 tips to succeed in a tandem paragliding with confidence, in a caring environment, and make it a unique moment.

Tip 1 : Choose the right place and your pilot to succeed in a tandem paragliding

In France, schools and independent structures supervise tandem paragliding. Each professional is a graduate of the state (DEJEPS), which guarantees you optimal safety and high quality support. You can therefore leave with peace of mind, being assured of the skills of the supervising team. But to make this first experience an unforgettable moment, the choice of the flight site plays a key role. And some flight sites offer conditions and landscapes much more impressive than others.

For example by the sea, the sea breeze gently carries you along the cliffs, with a view of the horizon. While in the mountains and high mountains you will enjoy snowy panoramas or bordered by majestic alpine meadows. Each site delivers a unique experience that will enrich your adventure.

Paraglidream is located in Chamonix to share with you a grandiose flight in the heart of the high mountains. Finally, it is really more than a trick to succeed in a tandem paragliding. It is an unforgettable experience for lovers of the Alps. But if you prefer above the sea, towards the Mediterranean.  In Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, Azur Parapente offers you an incredible flight between sky and sea. You will take off on the heights of Monaco with a final landing on the beach !

Tip 2 : Choose suitable clothing for a comfortable flight

To succeed in your tandem paragliding, the choice of your clothes is crucial. Being well equipped means ensuring a pleasant flight, without chills or discomfort. Here are some tips to dress appropriately. We advise you to wear sports shoes, comfortable pants and a long-sleeved top. The thickness and number of layers depend on the season and altitude of the take-off. In flight, you will be exposed to a wind of about 35 km/h, so plan enough layers to not get cold. It is always easier to remove a layer if you are too hot than to add a layer once exposed (which is, of course, impossible)

Simple advice to remember : it is better to be too hot at takeoff and be able to remove a layer, than to regret being cold once in the air—because it’s impossible to dress in full flight!

The pro tip : remember to protect yourself from the sun by applying sunscreen and of course wearing sunglasses. Whether by the sea or in the alpine valleys, summer or winter, the sun hits hard... So be careful!

Tip 3 : Sensitive to motion sickness ? Here is how to properly experience your tandem in paragliding

To succeed in a tandem paragliding, we will share with you an important advice often overlooked but essential. If you are prone to motion sickness (car, boat, plane...), this tip is for you.
During a paragliding flight, movements can sometimes be unpredictable due to variations in air masses. This can disturb sensitive stomachs, especially in the middle of the day when conditions are more thermal.
Our tips to avoid nausea :

  • Prefer an early morning flight : the air is generally calm. Remember to mention it when booking.
  • Indicate your sensitivity when booking : your pilot will be able to adapt the flight to your needs.
  • Eat light before flying : avoid meals that are too fatty or heavy (a large burger, fries, dessert and alcohol can ruin your experience). So prefer a light and balanced meal, and your body will thank you for it
  • Anticipate by taking an anti-nausea medication like Mer Calme or its equivalent, in prevention. Thus you will reduce the risk of feeling sick.

Pro tip : If despite everything, you feel bad in the air, immediately inform your pilot. He will know how to apply techniques to reduce the feeling of faintness and will allow you to fully enjoy the experience.

Tip 4 : Keep a lasting memory of your tandem paragliding

Your tandem  paragliding is part of the unforgettable experiences of a lifetime.  So why not keep a concrete record to relive it again and again... and share it with your loved ones ?

All schools offer a video option with an on-board camera (type GoPro), attached to a telescopic pole. This device captures the entire flight, from the first seconds in the air until landing, with a high-quality rendering.

At the end of the flight, you leave again :

  • either with a memory card containing all the images and videos,
  • either with the files directly transferred to your phone, ready to be shared instantly with your loved ones.

Little advice : consider requesting the video as soon as you book, some formulas already include it, others offer it as an option.

Tip 5 : Relax, everything will be fine !

The long-awaited moment of your tandem paragliding has finally arrived. You are experiencing a bit of stress before taking off and it’s normal. But rest assured, you are in good hands. In France, all tandem bikes are supervised by qualified and experienced professionals.  These seasoned pilots perform hundreds of flights each year. So you can relax with confidence.

At first, you may feel a little tension. However, once in the air, you will feel more and more relaxed and liberated.

Paragliding is an experience of freedom that leads to letting go. Open your eyes wide and let yourself be carried by the beauty of the landscape. It’s a unique viewpoint, accessible only by paragliding. So enjoy every moment to the full. This experience will undoubtedly be one of the memories etched forever in your mind.
